Straight Dope Primes the Pump:
"Are there any famous people who have suddenly, voluntarily, and so completely vanished from public life that no fan or journalist has ever been able to track them down?
"The prototypical example I'm thinking of is Deep Purple and Captain Beyond singer Rod Evans. He involved himself in an unauthorized Deep Purple "reunion" tour in 1980, got sued, and then completely disappeared from public life. There have been rumours that he got a medical degree and became a hospital director in California, though AFAIK no journalist has ever succeeded in finding him to confirm this. His whereabouts since 1980 have been a complete mystery to the public.
"Are there any other cases comparable to that of Rod Evans? Note that I'm not talking about famous people, like Bill Watterson, whose whereabouts are known but who nowadays usually decline to give interviews or attend public events. Nor am I talking about people like Glenn Miller or Jimmy Hoffa who were probably killed in an accident, in a crime, or in combat. I'm talking about people who are widely believed to be alive and well but who cannot be tracked down despite active efforts on the part of their fans or the media."

Before Dr. Phil did a show on her, Shelley Duvall was kinda a "vanished" celeb, I think.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | February 25, 2017 3:13 PM |
No, Shelley would pop up now and again in news or entertainment. She was never a recluse.
A season or two ago, Top Chef had a jerky contestant named Aaron. He seemed to relish to role of villain. I recently looked him up online and found that, after leaving top chef, he was arrested for hurting his girlfriend. In quick succession, the restaurant that employed him appears to have first fired him, then shut down. The chef abandoned his Twitter, deleted his Facebook, and has disappeared.

There doesn't seem to be any evidence of his death (other than his self acknowledged depression) and there have been numerous unproven sightings. I guess after so many years his family didn't see any other option.

This is a mighty fascinating thread! Do celebrated, as in well-known, criminals count? Because I would say the two girls on which the Kate Winslet movie HEAVENLY CREATURES was based certainly qualify as vanished, since both moved to different locations and changed their names.
The accomplice to the murder of the other girls mother ended up being murder/crime/fiction novelist, Ann Perry! It was years before the fans of those novels knew that they were reading crime novels from a real-life "criminal".

If you want to read a great book about this subject, I recommend Nick Hornby's Juliet, Naked. It's about a singer who disappears after releasing one album, and the cottage industry and internet chat groups that develop as a result. It is a great read for anyone who likes Hornby - I do! I do! -- music, and weird celebratory stories. Because the singer was from a previous era, there is also a little tinge melancholy that runs through the story, as the main characters still hold on an idol from their youth. I've read all of Hornby's books, and this is my favorite.

There was an actor, Wes Stern, who was on television a lot in the early 70s. I think he made a movie with Jacqueline Bissett before that. He was in teen magazines, guest-starred on "The Partridge Family," had a semi-regular role on "Rhoda", then when his minor moment was over, he just vanished except for a few TV guest shots. Not a notable story in itself, but nobody seems to have any idea what happened to him or where he went.

This thread confuses me. Are people just throwing out names of people they haven't heard about recently? I mean, Charlene Tilton was in the recent "Dallas" reboot; Andie MacDowell was recently on a television show on the Hallmark Channel, Casper van Dien is still in small movies and tv shows (like those "Sharktopolous" movies).
If you google most of these names, you'll find a lot of them are still working, but it's just on one of the 200 channels you're not watching, or direct to video movies you never rent/download.

The classic example of this is the singer Rodriguez. His disappearance and eventual discovery was chronicled in the Academy Award-winning documentary "Searching for Sugar Man" in 2012.
[quote]Searching for Sugar Man is a 2012 Swedish–British documentary film of a South African cultural phenomenon directed and written by Malik Bendjelloul which details the efforts of two Cape Town fans in the late 1990s, Stephen "Sugar" Segerman and Craig Bartholomew Strydom, to find out whether the rumoured death of American musician Sixto Rodriguez was true, and if not, to discover what had become of him. Rodriguez's music, which had never achieved success in the United States, had become very popular in South Africa although little was known about him in that country.

R92, that could be Schoeffling, there are other pictures on FB where the features seem to be the same. Unfortunately, if it is him, he didn't age well and looks much older than 55. I guess I'm with R93, if that is him, I would rather have remembered him as Jake Ryan.

I know for a fact that Gil Gerard ate his way out of a career. I once saw a memo from a PTB on a show he did (not the space one that made him famous), begging him to slim down. He couldn't lose it and nobody would hire him. And nobody would accept him as a character actor since he wasn't that versatile anyway.
Ditto, Jayne Kennedy, God bless her. She was gorgeous in her time. And very sweet. But just too BIG to last. I also ran into another beauty at a grocery story in the Valley who had the same issue -- beautiful but she looked like a linebacker as she got older: Lynda Day George.

Leslie Ann Powers (Penny from the original "Hairspray") truly fits this category. John Waters and Ricki Lake both say they want her to get in touch.
Two others:
A child actor named Michael-James Wixted (pictured) was very active on American TV in the 1960s and 1970s, and his career didn't peter out. It just stopped. There are queries on various message boards about him, but he seems to have truly vanished.
And this creepy one:
Jonathan Scott-Taylor played Damien in the second Omen film and got generally good reviews in a campy movie. Sigourney Weaver constantly works and has not vanished at all. She was never one of those attention seeking red carpet types. She is in Avatar 2 and 3 and is coming out in a new series.

Jayne Kennedy and her hubby Leon Issac Kennedy. Their career tanked when a home made sex tape got out. She was beautiful (albeit with a big hairy pussy).

One mysterious celeb disappearance was Emily Longstreth. She was in Private Resort, Pretty in Pink, and The Big Picture. She wasn't a big star by any means, but is still remembered by some. She disappeared suddenly in the early 90s.
There were postings on Crazy Days and Nights website that she fell into drugs and mental illness, was homeless in NYC. Her mother made a very long, defensive posting about how perfect and great her daughter was doing, it made me think it might be true, sadly enough.
Then there was postings on her amazon.com message board (amazon recently closed all their boards down) that she died after freezing to death on the streets of NYC in January 2015. Here's an archived capture of her board discussion.

Couple of names upthread I've run into.
I was at a party at Lincoln Center with Ursula Andress but that was over10 years ago. She looked fabulous in a tight gold lame dress. I'm not star struck but boy, did she strike me!
Joe Dallesandro is around too in NYC. I know.
Rona Barrett too, at another party, but goes back oh even before my encounter with La Andress.

R260 I know where she lives and also what her new name is. She has a husband and children and lives a normal life. I think she had some kind of business and might have been a teacher at some point as well.

R302 Pamela Springsteen is a photographer now. She doesn't seem to want to have anything to do with anything related to her acting career anyone. She'd probably rake it in at horror conventions, since her Sleepaway Camp sequel appearances have a fan base.

The girl who played Penny Pingleton in the original 1986 film of "Hairspray," Leslie Ann Powers, completely vanished.

R306 She resurfaced 2 years ago at 30th anniversary Hairspray Q&A at the IFC center in NYC. Apparently, she also lives in NYC.
Here's a picture of her at the event.

What happened to the sleeve of her dress? And who is the balding man on the side?
Is that the hilarious woman who played Prudence Pingleton on the left? That was someone I was never expecting to get heavy.

I know this is from several years ago but she didn't disappear, she just mostly retired after the Drew Carey Show. But she was a regular on a sitcom around the time this was first posted so clearly they didn't bother looking Kathy Kinney up on the IMDb.

Re: The Emily Longstreth info posted years ago, a lot of it seems to be false. For instance, the supposed ex sister-in-law talked about Emily's brother Eric in the present tense in 2017, but he passed away in 2012.
She appears to be alive per some online lookup resources that I won't link to, because she's not a public persona anymore.

Child star John P. Navin, Jr.
He was in everything for a brief period of time in the early 80s. He was in the first scene of the first episode of “Cheers.” He also co-starred with Ann Jillian in the short-lived sitcom “Jennifer Slept Here.” Then, nothing. His last IMDB credit was in 1993.

Jay Mohr was everywhere in the late 90s - what happened?

Reply 313: Interesting, thanks.
by Anonymous | reply 316 | August 27, 2020 2:08 AM |
Jay Mohr lost his looks, so it became hard to cast him. Part of the reason he did so well in the late 90s was that then he was both sexually attractive and a comedian ( a rare combination).
Speaking of which, what happened to Dane Cook? Hollywood really tried to foist him on the public--he didn't really have that much comic talent (despite his popularity at the time with college kids) so he didn't really do that well. He had decent features (but bad skin), and an amazing body.

R39 Marsha Warfield lives in Vegas with her girlfriend/wife, and has regular stand up gigs on the strip. She's very active on Twitter. I followed her before I was suspended for calling Betsy DeVos & Lea Michele cunts (and not even directly!). Which reminds me: I want my fucking Twitter account back.
I'm going to add Dinah Manoff & Kristy McNichol to the list. McNichol said long ago that her mental health made it necessary for her to retire from acting. But what's Manoff's story? It doesn't appear she's worked in years. Maybe they haven't "disappeared", but they're both definitely off the radar.

I'd forgotten how many of the people named in this thread hadn't disappeared at all.
Griffin Dunne never disappeared, he's had multiple projects every year going back two decades, and prior to that only had a couple years out of the spotlight.
Gene Hackman was simply retired, someone posted a photo of him buying a new bike about 2 years ago and he looked fine, not on death's door as rumors were suggesting.
Lee Horsley didn't disappear, he basically retired when the beefcake roles dried up, but he comes out of retirement for Tarantino movies. I wish I could remember where I saw this info but a couple years ago someone linked to a business he owns, plus he also used to write Western novels under a pen name, maybe still does.
