How to set up or update your Xfinity Wi-Fi settings
In the sections that follow, we will help you find where to log into your Xfinity router, find the default login and password, and learn how to update your router settings. Before we get started, you will want to make sure you have a device (phone, laptop, or desktop computer) that is connected to the internet through your router.
Having Xfinity Wi-Fi issues?
Is your Wi-Fi spotty, or are your wireless speeds moving at a snail’s pace? Take matters into your own hands and check out our guide on how to fix your Wi-Fi connection.
What is the Xfinity router login address?
Once you are sure your device is connected to your Xfinity router, you will want to open any browser available on your device and access what is known as the “admin tool.” For Xfinity router users, this process is made easy by entering the default Comcast router IP address, 10.0.0.1, into the web address bar.
This will not be true for all routers, however. If you do not own an Xfinity router, enter your router’s IP address into the search bar instead. You can sometimes find the default router IP address on the bottom of the device—otherwise, we have you covered with an extensive discussion on what is an IP address and how to find yours.
How to log in to your Xfinity router
Once you have entered the default IP into the address bar, you will be prompted to enter a username and password. If this is your first time logging into the router, enter “admin” for the username and “password” for the password.
If you are not using an Xfinity router, give routerpasswords.com a visit, as they have the most extensive list of routers and possible login combinations we could find.
Forgot your Xfinity Wi-Fi login and password?
If you’re having trouble logging in using the default credentials, chances are you—or the technician who set your internet up for you—have already changed the username and password combination. If this is the case, you will need to perform a factory reset on your router.
Before performing the reset, remember that a factory reset will restore your router to its original default settings, which include your Wi-Fi name and password. Keep your router manual handy so you can quickly reconnect wireless devices to the router while it’s in the default settings, or make sure you are using a device that is connected to the router via an Ethernet cord.
To perform the reset, look for a small pinhole on either the back or bottom of the device with a label next to it reading “reset.” Use a paperclip or the tip of a pen to press and hold the button down for 30 seconds. Your router lights will cycle off and then on again as the router resets itself.
You are now able to use the default login information to access the router admin tools.
How to change your Xfinity router login
Now that you have successfully accessed your router admin tools, let’s go ahead and change your Comcast router login information. Although your username will always remain “admin” on the Xfinity router, it is important to change your password at least once for security reasons.
- If this is your first time logging into your Xfinity router, you may be prompted immediately with a screen to change your password. Type in your password information and click Save.
- If you are not prompted to create a new password, look for the link in the top right corner of the screen labeled Change Password. Click the link and follow the instructions—and remember to click Save.
- When changing your password, make sure it has:
At least eight characters
Both upper and lowercase letters
At least one number
No special characters (e.g., !@#$%^*)
How to change your Xfinity Wi-Fi password
Another good practice for securing your home network is changing your Wi-Fi password from time to time. The Xfinity router admin tools make this easy.
- Log into your Xfinity router.
- In the left menu, click Gateway, then click Connection, then click Wi-Fi.
- Under Private Wi-Fi Network, you will see the name (SSID) of your Wi-Fi network.
- Click Edit on the right of your network name.
- From here, you can scroll down and click the box next to Show Network Password if you want to see what your current password is.
- Otherwise, scroll down and click the box next to Change Password. Type your password in the fields and remember to click Save at the bottom of the screen.
Note: In certain models of Xfinity routers, you may see two network names under Private Wi-Fi Network. If you are changing your network password, it is recommended to edit both of the network bands (2.4GHz and 5GHz) with the same password.
How to change your Xfinity Wi-Fi network name
Changing your Wi-Fi network name is another important step in protecting your network from hackers. Frequently, your default Wi-Fi information is physically located on a tag on the bottom or side of your router. If someone were to gain access to that, they could feasibly sit outside your home with a laptop and access your network.
Now that you know how to change your Wi-Fi password from within the admin tools, changing your Wi-Fi network name is just as easy.
- Log into your admin tools if you haven’t already.
- In the left menu, click Gateway, then click Connection, then click Wi-Fi.
- Find your Wi-Fi network name listed under Private Wi-Fi Network and click Edit.
- Type your desired new network name into the appropriate field and click Save at the bottom.
Tip: Use a network name that is memorable. Every time you connect a wireless device to your network you will need to remember which one belongs to you.
Note 1: In certain models of Xfinity routers, you may see two network names under Private Wi-Fi Network. If you are changing your network name, it is recommended to edit both of the network bands (2.4GHz and 5GHz) with the same name.
Note 2: In certain models of Xfinity routers, or if “Wi-Fi Intelligence” is enabled on your account, you will not be able to edit your Wi-Fi name or password through the admin tools and will be prompted to use the Xfinity xFi app to make these changes.
Use your 5 GHz Wi-Fi network for faster speeds
If you are a user with a dual-band modem/router, you may not know that you can manually choose to connect to the 5GHz network for faster speeds. Conversely, if you find yourself further away from the router, or if you feel your speeds are choppy, try manually connecting to the 2.4GHz network as this band is optimized for better coverage in a larger area.
Tips for optimizing your Xfinity Wi-Fi setup
Although optimizing your Wi-Fi setup can get pretty technical, there are some easy steps you can take to make sure your home network runs safely and smoothly.
Change your passwords often
Regularly changing the passwords of your Wi-Fi router (to access admin tools) as well as your Wi-Fi network will significantly increase your network security.
Power cycling
Power cycling your modem/router refers to unplugging the devices, waiting 30 seconds to one minute, then plugging them back in again. This should be done anytime you begin to experience problems with your internet—or once every month or so.
Get a virtual private network (VPN) for your router
VPNs allow you to connect to the internet through encrypted tunnels into which no other party can see. That includes hackers, your internet service provider, and even governments. VPNs also can change your IP address, allowing you to bypass government censorships, access media limited to certain regions in the world, and even avoid regional price gouging related to hotel or car rentals.
Although you can get a VPN for individual devices, we recommend getting a VPN for your router for your home network, as it allows all devices connected to the router to benefit from the privacy technology. Here are the VPN apps that stood out to us:
- ExpressVPN: We think ExpressVPN offers the best VPN app for your router overall. It has the easiest and most supportive installation process for routers, with videos to walk you through the process and the option of live chat support if you need additional help.
Get ExpressVPN | Read Our ExpressVPN Review - NordVPN: NordVPN also has extensive tutorials on setting up a VPN on a variety of routers as well as premium features you can use on your other devices that require a VPN.
Get NordVPN | Read Our NordVPN Review - Surfshark: On top of including installation guides for routers, Surfshark is best for people on a budget. It offers the best pricing of these three VPNs, and it allows for unlimited simultaneous connections, so you can all the devices you have, not just your router.

Connecting high-bandwidth devices via Ethernet
The more devices connected wirelessly to your network, the more “noise” you are introducing to the wireless network, which can lead to poor speeds or spotty internet. Connect as many devices as you can via Ethernet cable—especially high-bandwidth devices such as gaming PCs or consoles or your dedicated streaming device. This will free up more Wi-Fi real estate so your wireless network isn’t overrun with too many devices.
Parental controls
Access parental controls by logging in to the admin tool and clicking Parental Control on the left. Here you can manually blacklist websites throughout your entire network, while also choosing which devices should be able to bypass the blacklist.
Use WPA3 passwords
WPA3 (Wireless Protected Access 3) passwords are the newest iteration of a security program led by a wireless industry organization known as the Wi-Fi Alliance. Not all routers are currently compatible with WPA3 yet. However, if yours is, you’ll want to activate it for added security.
Do so by accessing your admin tools, then clicking on Gateway > Connection > Wi-Fi. Here you can click Edit for the appropriate network, scroll down to security, and select WPA3 in the dropdown menu.
